Campina, which is in talks to merger with fellow dairy group Friesland Foods, said Elverding would replace Herman van Karnebeek, who would resign from the board by rotation.

Elverding, 58, spent eight years as CEO of ingredients firm DSM. He has also held management positions at chemical giant Akzo Nobel and retailer De Bijenkorf.

Last month, Campina admitted “exploratory” talks were being held with Friesland Foods but said the management of both companies supported the idea of merger.

Friesland Foods and Campina said their proposed merger would create “one of the leading global dairy companies”. The combined turnover of two companies stands at EUR8.3bn (US$12bn).
