The group said it had conducted “intensive and constructive consultation” on the future of both formats and, with the management of Golff, would now be studying the feasibility of merging the two operations.

If the integration goes ahead, the EM-TÉ Supermarkten chain would consist of over 140 full-service stores, some 80 of which would be company-operated, with the rest operated by independent retailers.

Sligro added that the operational and back-office functions of the two chains were already fully integrated. Format and product range management, store automation, real estate management and logistics are controlled centrally from the head office in Veghel and both formats are supplied by food retail distribution centres in Kapelle and Putten, the company said.

Sligro said it would announce its final decision regarding the full merger in the first quarter of 2009.
