By 2008, the total number of Dutch cashiers is due to fall by half from its current level of 60,000, reports Zibb. The average cashier costs his or her employer €20,000 (US$21,600), considerably more than a self-service till.

Leading Dutch supermarkets Albert Heijn and C1000 are running pilot tests of self-service tills, while Dekamarkt is expecting to start test next year.
