Several thousand cashiers in Dutch supermarkets are expected to be made redundant in the next two years as self-service tills become more widespread.
By 2008, the total number of Dutch cashiers is due to fall by half from its current level of 60,000, reports Zibb. The average cashier costs his or her employer €20,000 (US$21,600), considerably more than a self-service till.
Leading Dutch supermarkets Albert Heijn and C1000 are running pilot tests of self-service tills, while Dekamarkt is expecting to start test next year.
