Products that caught the eye this week include a new low-calorie yogurt under General Mills‘ Yoplait brand and on-the-go vegan snacks from Quorn Foods.

General Mills launches Yoplait Zero

US-based consumer goods giant General Mills is launching a low-calorie fruit yogurt in the UK under its Yoplait brand.

Yoplait Zero has less than 60 calories in each pot and contains real fruit pieces in three varieties – strawberry, peach and pineapple – with no added sugar. They are free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

The yogurts are available now in Morrisons and Asda stores at a recommended retail price of GBP1.89 (US$2.47) for a pack of four.

Joanna Goodman, marketing manager for yogurt at General Mills, said: “We’ve seen that Yoplait Zero is hugely popular in Ireland and we’re confident that we can replicate that success here in the UK. Shopper’s habits have changed when buying into this category. They are no longer willing to compromise on taste for lower-calorie options.”

Quorn debuts Southern Fried Poppers

Meat-free brand Quorn Foods is rolling out on-the-go Southern Fried Poppers.

Made with vegetarian chicken encased in fried breadcrumbs, Southern Fried Poppers will be available in Sainsbury’s in January at a RRP of GBP1.29 ($1.69) for a 60-gram box of six.

“This consumer-led NPD will benefit the snacking segment of the meat-free category, bringing in even more new shoppers,” Quorn said as the company exceeded annual sales of GBP200m.

Jennifer Shepherd, brand manager at Quorn Foods, added: “As more than half of all UK consumers are now reducing their meat consumption, it’s important that we continue to provide products that deliver on taste and health, as well as convenience. Quorn Southern Fried Poppers are high in protein and fibre but low in saturated fat, providing a delicious and nutritious protein hit for consumers on the go.”

Hippeas adds tortilla chips to chickpea range

Better-for-you US snack firm Hippeas is adding tortilla chips to its organic chickpea-based range.

Hippeas Tortilla Chips are USDA-certified organic, gluten-free and vegan, offering three grams of protein and the same amount of fibre for each one-ounce serving.

The chips feature three flavours not found in Hippeas’ existing ‘Puffs’ range – Straight Up Sea Salt, Rockin’ Ranch and Jalapeno Vegan Cheddar – and will be available in Whole Foods Market stores from today (18 December).

Chief executive Joe Serventi said: “This product expansion signifies the growth of Hippeas as a snacking platform and lifestyle brand that our fans know and love. We are extremely fortunate to be recognised as a brand that is pioneering the next generation of better-for-you snacking and working closely with retailers such as Whole Foods Market to develop innovation that both retailers and consumers are looking for.”
