Mike Peterson, chairman of Sheepco, and his counterpart at Meat New Zealand, Jeff Grant, said they will establish a new organisation to carry out this work. “This is a significant step forward for sheep and beef farming in New Zealand,” they said.
Petersen told the Southland Times it made no sense to have two organisations talking to the same farmers about many of the same things. “We have a lot in common when it comes to how meat and wool levies are invested at present, particularly in the research area […] The rationale for a single organisation is strong.”
Grant and Petersen also announced they would run a single process of farmer consultation and business planning leading up to a farmer vote about the middle of next year over the future of beef, sheep meat and wool levies.
