US firm Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches is set to relocate its production and corporate headquarters to a new facility in its home city of Richmond, Virginia.

The move will cost the company $5.8m and is expected to generate 166 new jobs, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said in a statement.

The move comes as the ice cream maker “doubled in size” year-on-year and has “outgrown” its existing production site, the statement added.

The new facility will occupy a 29,000-square-feet building on a five-acre site, originally built in 1983.

Of the total space, the ice cream maker will allocate 24,000 square feet for production.

Founded in 2016, Nightingale produces “handcrafted” ice cream products that are sold in more than 5,000 stores across the US. Stockists include Whole Foods Market, Kroger, The Fresh Market and Harris Teeter.
