Japanese noodle giant Nissin said that its first half performance was lifted by continued improvements in the Japanese economic environment.

The company said sales increased to JPY217.94bn (US$1.77bn) in the six month period, up from JPY201.97bn in the prior year. Growth was supported by a resurgent Japanese economy but the company warned on future uncertainty.

"The Japanese economy continued to stage a gradual recovery, with employment and income generally improving and consumer spending showing a steady rebound. The prospects of this recovery remain uncertain, however, with a growing risk of downward pressure on the Japanese economy caused by a downturn in the economies of China and other emerging Asian countries," Nissin noted.

First half operating income to 30 September rose to JPY12.39bn versus JPY9.4bn in the comparable period of last year. Net income stood at JPY10.81bn compared to JPY8.11bn last year.
