The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reason to believe that the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease has been brought about by the importation of sheep from Carlisle market in Great Britain. Licence to import these sheep was on the condition that they move directly to a slaughter house. It is the Department’s understanding that they were, in fact, taken to farms in Northern Ireland, and possibly the Republic of Ireland, rather than having been slaughtered.
