Prompted by fears that the practise could lead to the spread of BSE, the EU implemented a total ban on bone and fishmeal on 4 December 2000.
In Norway however, the livestock industry has continued to use animal bone meal, as well as failing to carry out testing for the disease on all cattle over 30 months old who are destined for the food chain. Such testing was also made obligatory by the EU authorities.
The country will continue to use animal bone meal until 1 March.
