Mattilsynet, Norway’s food safety authority, has applied for special government funding in a bid to keep the body up and running.
“We are now at a situation where Mattilsynet lacks the resources to guarantee future payments to its 75 employees. Lay-offs are possible if the financial problems go unresolved,” said Jan Gravning, the employees’ representative on Mattilsynet’s board. “The lack of proper finances means Mattilsynet is not as effective as it should be, and cannot do the job it was established to do.”

Mattilsynet is hopeful the Norwegian government will provide the funding and work with the organization to ensure that it can perform its statutory functions properly, said MD Joakim Lystad.
“There are funding problems, but these can be overcome with the use of more efficient operating systems and acceptable funding levels,” Lystad said.
