The innovation could lead to the halving of jobs in this sector of the industry.

Machines have been able to handle fish spines, but pin bone removal has remained a manual task. To ensure the efficiency of the machines each fillet goes under an X-ray device, which locates any bones that the picking process may have missed.

The devices have been tested for several months at a Norway Seafoods plant in Stamsund.

The machines allow for 4-6% more of the fillet surviving the boning process, according to senior researcher Karsten Heia.
