The Norwegian Competition Authority has levied a fine against retailer Norgesgruppen over its acquisition of a number of stores from peer ICA.

The competition watchdog ruled that Norgesgruppen’s 2012 acquisition of 13 hypermarkets from ICA breached competition laws and fined the group a total of NOK25m (US$4.3m).

Responding to the news, a spokesperson for Norgesgruppen told just-food that the company maintains the deal did not breach competition regulations.

“We believe that this was a legal transaction. However The Competition Authority has another interpretation of the law,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson declined to comment on whether the company is planning to contest the fine or launch an appeal against the ruling.

“We are now examining  the Competition Authority’s notice, and will reply within the deadline,” the spokesperson said.
