Orkla’s FMCG arm is considering selling Bakers, its Norwegian bakery division.

Orkla Brands announced today (25 November) it is looking to sell the business before the end of the first half of 2011.

The company said Bakers had “undergone significant restructuring in the past few years and is now a highly competitive company”.

“Bakery goods must be fresh each day, which requires a different type of business and distribution system than for other grocery products. In this respect, Bakers differs from our other branded goods operations,” said Torkild Nordberg, CEO of Orkla Brands.

Bakers has been owned by Orkla since 1991 and delivers bread cakes and other baked goods to grocery stores, petrol stations, and kiosks.

Speaking to just food, Hakon Mageli, Orkla Brands director of corporate affiars, said the company “has given no indication of price at this stage”.
