The Norwegian Competition Authority has blocked the proposed merger between Norwegian meat processor Gilde Norsk Kjott BA and the poultry group Prior Norge BA on competition grounds.

The regulator said a potential merger would further undermine the already weak competition on the domestic poultry market, possibly leading to higher prices.

Prior is the largest poultry producer in Norway, with its nearest rival, the recently merged group comprising Den Stolte Hane AS and Cardinal Foods AS, holding a market share almost 50% smaller than Prior’s.

The regulator added that with the merger blocked, Gilde may enter the poultry market in its own right, becoming a competitor to Prior, which would enhance the general competitive environment.
