Norwegian seafood exports rose to 7.6bn Norwegian kroner (US$1.2bn) in the first quarter of 2005 a rise of 556m kroner on the same period last year, the Norwegian Seafood Export Council said today (Tuesday).

The council said that exports to Russia had exceeded the billion kroner mark during the first three months of 2005, the first time sales to any single country had passed that mark since 2001, the record year for sales. In 2001, the world’s largest seafood importer was Japan and it bought more than 1bn kroner worth of Norwegian seafood.
Sales to Russia are 461m kroner higher than in the same period last year.
The export value of salmon and trout was at a record high 3bn kroner in the first quarter, 10% higher than at the same time last year, and 123m kroner more than the same period in 2001. Fresh whole salmon sales rose by increasing by 299m kroner to just under 2bn kroner in the first quarter. A strong increase in exports to Poland, France and Great Britain is helping the EU maintain an 80% share of exports of fresh whole salmon from Norway.
