Fonterra has recalled fresh cream sold under its Anchor and Pams brand in New Zealand after tests indicated products could be contaminated with E.Coli.

The company said yesterday (13 January) it is recalling 8,700 bottles of fresh cream that have been distributed to retail and foodservice customers. The recall includes Anchor and Pams cream with the best-before date of 21 January 2014.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience and concern this recall might cause but food safety and quality are our top priorities,” Peter McClure. MD for Fonterra Brands NZ, said.

Last year, Fonterra initiated a massive recall of its whey powder concentrate ingredient over concerns it was contaminated with a bacteria that can cause botulism. While it transpired that the recall was a false alarm, it nevertheless sparked further consumer-facing recalls from the likes of Danone and Coca-Cola Co., dented the reputation of the New Zealand dairy industry and prompted a parliamentary investigation into the incident.

Danone confirmed last week it plans to launch legal action against Fonterra to recoup losses associated with the incident.
