Fonterra, the world’s largest dairy exporter, is to build a milk processing site in New Zealand, its domestic market.
The company plans to build a plant in central Canterbury on New Zealand’s South island. The proposed facility, which is scheduled to be up and running in 2012, will create over 50 jobs.

“Canterbury is the fastest-growing dairying region in New Zealand. It is now producing about 15% of the country’s milk for export and growing at a rate of more than 5% annually,” said Gary Romano, Fonterra’s trade and operations managing director.
The site will be based in Darfield, about 45km from Christchurch, and is currently planned to have the capacity to process up to 2.2 million litres of milk per day.
Last month, Fonterra confirmed it will stop cheese production at its Longburn manufacturing facility, in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
