New Zealand meat group PPCS is planning to close a processing facility on the country’s South Island.


The company said it may shut its Burnside processing facility outside Dunedin – a move that will lead to the loss of some 138 jobs.


PPCS said a final decision would be made next week but chief executive Keith Cooper insisted the closure was “a necessary part” of the company’s bid to improve productivity.


“PPCS Burnside requires adequate volumes of deer for venison processing and lamb and deer skins for its pelt house and tannery operations respectively,” Cooper said. “The forecast fall in lamb and deer numbers seriously impacts the ongoing viability of the venison and skin processing operations at Burnside.”


Under the company’s proposals, PPCS would process its South Island deer at four other facilities – while venison operations would be discontinued.
