US food companies Orion Food Systems and Land Mark Products have joined hands in a deal backed with an investment by a local private-equity firm.

The owners of South Dakota-based Land Mark, Jason Farrell and Randy Johnson, will be investors in the combined business, along with the firm’s founder Rod Simonson and an affiliate of private investor One Rock Capital Partners, headquartered in New York. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Farrell will retain his role as president and chief executive of Land Mark, while Johnson will continue as executive vice president of finance, according to a statement.

Orion was founded in 1983 and supplies foodservice channels in the US and overseas including pre-made entrées and snacks under a variety of brands: Hot Stuff Pizza; Gourmet Grub; Chix Chicken; Chopz; Paavo’s Pizza and Papa Primo’s Italian Kitchen. It has an additional facility in Kimball, Tennessee.

Meanwhile, Land Mark manufactures pizza and sandwiches for retail and foodservice outlets from its base in Milford, Iowa, and also supplies convenience stores and private label. It manages the brands Piccadilly Circus Pizza and Day’N Night Bites.

Frank Orfanello, the board chairman of Orion, said: “As a combined business, we will be able to offer a tailored solution to meet the needs of convenience-store operators, from turnkey foodservice franchises that include equipment and post-sale consulting, to custom-designed programmes for distributors.”
