Orkla has removed the palm oil from its Smash chocolate on sale in Norway and Finland as part of ongoing plans to reduce its use of the ingredient.

The Norway-based food group is using a blend of sunflower oil, shea butter and coconut oil in the Smash lines. Sunflower oil is "the main ingredient" in the blend, the company told just-food.

Orkla said it is looking to replace palm oil with alternative ingredients "that are better from a health and an environmental perspective".

Last year, the group removed palm oil from products including Kornmo, Tom & Jerry and Bokstavkjeks biscuits, Polly mixed nuts and New Energy chocolate.

"Since 2008, we have reduced our use of palm oil by 19,000 tonnes. The Orkla confectionery and snacks business area has worked intensively to find fully adequate substitutes, and has thereby reduced palm oil consumption by 77% in the period from 2008 to 2014. However, palm oil has unique properties, which makes it difficult to replace. Where it is impossible to find a substitute for palm oil, we therefore aim to buy only sustainably produced palm oil," the company said. "By 2017 at the latest, all palm oil used in Orkla’s branded products must be traceable and sustainably produced."
