PAKISTAN: Fish prices soar on high demand, low supply
Low hauls have sent prices for fish and derived products surging by 50-100% in Pakistan. Fish such as black and white pomphret, heera, surmai, dothar, sua, sawan, dangri and raahu have been particularly seriously affected. The situation is hitting exporters hard, as they have to pass on the higher prices they pay to their buyers, yet the market is not receptive. Since 11 September, economic caution has changed consumption patterns and demand for fish has fallen as a result. Many buyers have switched to cheaper products.
