Japan has expressed a serious interest in importing fresh produce from Pakistani firms, according to Sindh agriculture minister Hasan Ali Chaniho. Chaniho revealed the news after returning from an eight-day visit to Japan, adding that any export agreement is subject to the fulfilment of certain standards in quality, grading, packaging, fugimentation and quarantine.

With these requirements met in the shape of export processing facilities near the major airports, the export value of vegetables, fruits and flowers can easily be multiplied by ten, according to Chaniho. This represents enormous potential for the country’s current exports, valued at US$120m.  


Chaniho promised he would work to revolutionise the domestic agricultural sector, and revealed that he has submitted a report to the chief executive general Pervez Musharraf and Sindh governor Mohammedmian Soomro.
