The world’s first non-surgical swine embryo transfer will be completed today by a group of foreign scientists in the Philippines, evidence of the pioneering technology that may boost the domestic pork industry by between 30-50%.

The technique is faster and safer than traditional artificial insemination according to the US-based firm Legred Struthers Genetics, who developed the technique with the patented Gourley Scope delivery system.

Using frozen semen, breeders will soon be able to modify or enhance porcine bloodlines within one generation instead of 7-8 years and hence create fatter pigs quicker. Because it involves the shipping of an embryo, the technique eliminates the risks associated with shipping in a live animal, which might be a carrier of disease.
