The association argues that the halving of duties is essential in the light of the current weak market demand. Foot and mouth fears have led to a temporary ban on beef imports from Europe, and meat processors have to import from Canada and the US. PAMPI believes government assistance is needed to lower costs until the market picks up again.

Felix Tiukinhoy, a PAMPI representative, explained: “We would like to ask the government to help us temporarily while prices are high.”
