Concerns about the disease being present in US cattle sparked an import ban in June on beef, live cattle and related products, but American authorities have persuaded Manila its certification systems are effective enough to guarantee its beef exports are BSE-free.


In a related deal following talks with the US Trade Representative office, the Philippines also announced it would drop plans to subject in-quota imports of US poultry to temporary safeguard duties. The Philippine poultry market is the second largest in Southeast Asia.
