Associated British Foods has sold its Polish sugar operations to German sugar group Pfeifer & Langen.

The deal, announced today (11 August) for an undisclosed sum, will see ABF quit the Polish sugar sector after 20 years.

The business, which has a manufacturing site in Glinojeck, is Poland’s fourth-biggest sugar processor and ABF said it wanted to focus on countries where it could have market leadership.

Chief executive George Weston said: “Our market-leading positions with British Sugar in the UK and Azucarera Ebro in Iberia combine to give us a strong presence in the rapidly-consolidating EU sugar market.”

In December, ABF snapped up Azucarera Ebro from Spanish food group Ebro Puleva for EUR385m (US$543.7m).
