The Portugal-based retailer, which owns the Biedronka chain in Poland, has been linked to the possible acquisition of 20 Carrefour Express stores in the central European country.
However, a spokesperson for Jeronimo Martins stayed silent when questioned about the reports, saying only that the retailer’s management was “aware” of “everything that happens in its geographies”.
The spokesperson confirmed the retailer’s plans to open 150 stores in Poland in 2009. Like-for-like sales at its Biedronka chain jumped by over 20% last year, with EBITDA soaring by 72%.
The Biedronka chain, which had over 1,350 stores at the end of 2008, now accounts for over half of Jeronimo Martins’ group EBITDA.
