Large supermarkets and hypermarkets operating in Poland could soon see their retail practises curtailed when the Polish parliament approves the introduction of a series of measures designed to reduce unfair competition in the retail sector.

The government said that the new legislation includes a move against the practice of giving consumers “free gifts” with certain purchases, and the selling of products at below cost price. Any law concerning this will exclude out-of-date products and annual sales dates.

The legislation also wants to stop “pyramid selling schemes”, where only those retailers at the top make money.

According to the local Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper, however, the legislation is fraught with difficulties because it is quite vague.
