POLAND: Laws to enforce EU regulations meet with opposition

In a bid to improve the quality of Polish consumer goods, and increase the market potential for export, the Sejm has recently been debating further laws that would require the adjustment of domestic regulations so that they were compatible with EU standards. A new inspectorate would also be introduced to evaluate and monitor production.The government proposal has caused much controversy, notably among representatives of the Polish Peasant's Party, who believe such laws would be an assault on small companies and farms, and are guaranteed only to add to the current problems of Polish agriculture.The system is yet to be approved, but once it is, EU regulations would become law from January 2002.
