The deal, announced in December last year, would have seen Rieber purchase the Gellwe brand, with products ranging from tea to muesli and chocolate, from Poland’s Foodcare.
However, the Polish competition authority has blocked the deal on the grounds that it would lessen competition in certain product categories.
“The anti-monopoly office found that our strength in some product categories would give us a market position that damaged competition in the market,” a spokesperson for Rieber told just-food. “We have decided not to appeal the decision.”
As a result, the two groups have terminated the transaction.
