Tesco is reportedly contemplating a EUR800m (US$1bn) bid for Casino’s Polish retail operations.

Earlier this year, Casino said that it intends to sell EUR2bn of its international assets by the end of next year, with the aim of reducing the retail giant’s net debt.

Tesco is already the market leader in Poland with a 4% market share. The acquisition of Casino’s Polish business would break established patterns in that market, as Tesco has grown it’s business organically there.

According to reports, Carrefour, who has a smaller presence in Poland than Tesco, is also interested in the possible acquisition.

Neither Tesco or Carrefour were available for comment.
