Scientists at the State Veterinary Institute in Pulawy confirmed the animal in question, which was discovered on a farm in the Opole region of Silesia, is the offspring of a cow imported from the Netherlands. The mother cow shows no sign of the disease, reported the Polish News Bulletin.

Scientists were quick to play down public fears that this could be the start of a new outbreak. Professor Han Zmudzinski from Pulawy said: “Probably what we are looking at here is one of the natural occasional cases of BSE. The disease may sometimes appear entirely independently. There is no epidemic.”
