Meat-substitute group Quorn Foods is expanding its range of frozen ready meals in the UK where, for the first time, products will be merchandised in the country alongside their meat equivalents.

Quorn is rolling out three products that, it said, are a “healthier take” on a “British classics”. The three new ready meals are: meat free mince and sweet potato casserole; meat free chicken and pesto risotto; and meat free chicken and bacon lattice.

The company said the launch comes in response to growing demand for its “healthy” and “convenient” products. The group revealed it has seen sales of its frozen ready meals grow by 63% year-on-year. Its full range of ready meals now comprises six frozen meals and four chilled options.

Quorn said its retail customers plan to merchandise its new products in the main frozen ready meal fixture, alongside equivalent products that contain meat. Quorn’s existing meat-free toad-in-the-hole and meat free lasagne will also be moved out of the meat-free section of the freezer and into the main ready-meal cabinet, the company revealed.

Peter Harrison, marketing director, said: “The trend for healthier meals that are quick to prepare shows no sign of slowing.  Three quarters of Quorn customers are actually not vegetarians… It would also seem that retailers are reacting to the opportunities created through the growing trend by placing Quorn ready meals alongside all others.”

Last autumn, Philippines-based food group Monde Nissin struck a deal to buy Quorn, in a transaction that valued the UK business at GBP550m.
