Romanian soybean farmers will have to cease production of genetically modified soybeans when the country enters the European Union.

Of the total 130,000 hectares of land given over to soybean production in Romania, GM soybeans account for 87,500.

The Romanian Government did not request a derogation or transition period to give up GM soybeans during negotiations on agriculture with Brussels. Romanian farmers, a report in Rompres states, “have no choice but to hope for a change of view and in Brussels being more permissive to the biotechnological crops.”
