Rewe has refused to be drawn on reports that its subsidiary Billa Romania is looking at around five rival chains for acquisition.
Billa CEO Wolfgang Janisch had been quoted in local press saying: “’The main purpose of an acquisition on the local market is to accelerate Billa’s growth. We have not yet reached the due diligence stage with the targeted chains.”
But when contacted by just-food, a Rewe spokesman said: “Generally speaking, we do always consider opportunities for acquisitions, also in Romania of course. But please understand that we do not comment on any specifics.”
Billa is the leading supermarket chain in Romania.
“At the moment we run 30 Billa supermarkets in Romania. We opened our last two markets in Bacau and Slatina just a few days ago,” the spokesma said.
