US convenience retailer 7-Eleven has dismissed reports in Russia that it is looking to expand in the country.

“There is no basis of foundation about 7-Eleven developing in Russia,” a spokesperson for the retailer told just-food. “Not sure how that got started, but it certainly is rumour and speculation. Typically we don’t comment on it, but quite frankly, we’ve made no such announcement, and have no such plans at this time.”

Reports in Russia, citing the country’s franchise retail association, had said 7-Eleven was interested in entering the market.

7-Eleven is owned by Japanese retailer Seven & I Holdings and is the world’s largest convenience retailer. It operates, franchises and licenses more than 44,300 stores in 16 countries, with 9,100 in North America. Worldwide sales for 2010 stood at US$62.7bn.
