The Russian government is reportedly looking at the development of a "national system" to oversee the quality and safety of food products.

According to Russian reports, the system will create uniform procedures for tracking products and overcome the "double standard" for Russian and imported food stuffs.

Russian paper Kommersant said Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is due to update the country's government on the development and implementation of traceability, product quality and safety measures. By 1 December, officials will report on the development of the document, Kommersant reported.

The new system would theoretically integrate responsibilities currently overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Economy and Rospotrebnadzor.
