Russian authorities have once again suggested that the government is open to considering whether to ease the ban on food imports from Greece, Hungary and Cyprus.

Russia imposed trade restrictions on all EU member states last year in response to western sanctions over Russia's role in the Ukrainian crisis. The Russian government had previously said that it is considering moderating the trade embargo placed on Greece, Hungary and Cyprus, with a focus on fruit and vegetable products.

According to local reports, Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fyodorov suggested yesterday (7 April) that the Russian government is nearing a decision. "The government, may have proposals in light of… relations with certain countries [and] may have proposals on removing some countries from this list [of banned countries]," he told reporters.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow today. However, an agreement on restoring trade with Greece is unlikely to be reached during this visit, Fyodorov reportedly said.

Representatives at the Ministry of Agriculture could not be reached at time of press.
