IGA, the US-based voluntary independent supermarket group, has announced plans to expand into Russia in co-operation with Moscow-based holding company the Mercury Group.

Mercury owns Megapolis Trading Company, the largest FMCG distribution company in Russia. Megapolis has been approved as an IGA-licensed distributor and will in turn be able to license independent Russian retailers under the IGA banner.

Under the terms of the agreement, Megapolis will follow a five-year strategic plan to develop the IGA brand in Russia. Development will begin during the fourth quarter of this year.

“This new partnership between Megapolis and IGA provides tremendous synergies and opportunities for both parties for the development of independent retailing in Russia,” Mercury president Igor Kesaev said.

“Megapolis benefits by expanding its product portfolio with IGA brands while maximising the effectiveness of its established vast distribution network. Moreover, we will gain from IGA’s more than 80 years of knowledge and experience working with independent retailers.”
