The new stores will have space of 1,500 sq.m. compared to a standard Metro Cash and Carry outlet of about 10,000 sq.m. The range in the stores will comprise about 3000 items.

According to Oksana Tokareva, head of Metro Russia corporate affairs department, the development of small-format stores will allow the company to get access to smaller cities.

Analysts believe the new concept has a good chance to succeed in Russia. The popularity of stores with a high share of private labels in Russia is steadily increasing due to the fact that they allow consumers to purchase products of excellent quality at low price.

The German retail giant has already opened Metro Punct stores in Poland and Romania and the company is continuing its testing in Central and Eastern Europe.
