The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia (FNPR) has criticised Nestle for ignoring regional inflation rates when calculating pay increases.

The union represents employees from a Nestle confectionery factory in Perm, in the Urals.

According to reports, the average wage at Nestle’s Kamskaya confectionary plant in Perm was RUB16,000 (US$671), with factory workers receiving RUB7,000.

However, Nestle maintains that its pay levels are fair.

“We pay a competitive salary in this region. A 40% increase is unfounded, especially as all salaries were increased by 15% in January 2008,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.

The company and the union have entered into formal labour discussions.

Nestle Russia said in a statement that it hoped the dispute would be resolved shortly.

“We affirm that it is in our interests to resolve the labour dispute based on economically justified and acceptable proposals,” the company said.
