US retail giant Wal-Mart is reportedly considering expanding organically in Russia by building its own stores rather than relying on the acquisition of a local player.
Wal-Mart has been linked to the possible acquisition of a number of Russian retailers – including Lenta, Kopeika and Karusel – but the company is now said to be considering alternative means of entry into the market.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, Wal-Mart has shifted its focus to include both possibilities when previously it had been seeking acquisition opportunities in the market.
Citing an unnamed source, the Russian paper claimed that Wal-Mart would look to open new stores in high-density residential locations.
