Russia’s largest retailer X5 has remained silent over reports that it has reached an agreement with regional grocer Alpi to acquire 22 supermarket locations.
According to a report in Russian daily Kommersant, X5 will pay about US$240m for the sites.
However, a spokesperson for X5 told just-food that the company was unable to confirm the move.
Previously, X5 has indicated that expanding its hypermarket business outside of the mature markets of St Petersburg and Moscow is a top priority for the retailer. It said that this would be achieved through new store openings and strategic acquisitions.
X5 operates the Pyaterochka and Perekrestok chains. The group had 1,003 stores at the end of September.
