Moscow banned the import of food products from the EU, US, Australia, Norway and Canada over a year ago in response to economic sanctions placed on Russia by Western authorities over the country's role in the Ukrainian conflict.

However, some food products – such as cheese and meat – are still making their way into the country. The Russian government last week issued an order these products should be destroyed.

According to the BBC, the move has garnered a mixed response, with some shoppers flagging the presence of embargoed food in the supermarkets, while others suggest that the food should not be wasted at a time when food prices in the country are rising. An online petition launched by Muscovite Olga Saveleva has already attracted 285,000-plus signatures,
