Saputo has moved to enhance its position in speciality cheese in North America with the purchase of Canada-based Woolwich Dairy for C$80m (US$61.2m).
With annual revenues of around C$70m, Ontario-headquarted Woolwich is a leading producer of branded and own-label goat's cheese sold in Canada and the US. It has three manufacturing plants in Quebec, Ontario and Wisconsin, as well as a distribution centre in Ontario, and has around 190 employees.
The key Woolwich brands are Woolwich Dairy, Chevrai and Wholesome Goat.
The acquisition sees Saputo snap up a Canada-based producer after its last two deals came in Australia.
Last year, Saputo made significant inroads into the Australian cheese market after becoming a majority stakeholder in Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory in March 2014, acquiring nearly 88% of the company's shares. In March this year, WCB bought cheese assets, including the Coon, Cracker Barrel and Fred Walker brands, from Australian food and drinks group Lion.
