US frozen foods business Schwan’s Company has agreed to terms for the acquisition of local firm MaMa Rosa’s Pizza from California-based private-equity house HGGC for an undisclosed sum.

Schwan’s said the acquisition of MaMa Rosa’s, which manufactures foods for the foodservice industry and markets products in retail stores under the MaMa Rosa’s and Fight’n Tomato Pizza Co. pizza brands, is expected to be finalised on 15 June.

MaMa Rosa’s employs approximately 250 and operates a 160,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Sidney, Ohio.

Schwan’s CEO Dimitrios Smyrnios said: “For Schwan’s, this acquisition demonstrates our commitment to the US pizza market and gives us an opportunity to immediately expand our pizza business. MaMa Rosa’s will become part of a world-class team that makes high-quality frozen foods for foodservice, home delivery and retail outlets.”

HGGC co-founder and MD Greg Benson said the sale “represents an extremely positive business decision that will take MaMa Rosa’s Pizza to the next level in terms of growth and distribution”. The private-equity firm had owned MaMa Rosa’s Pizza since 2011.
