US pork groups Seaboard Foods and Triumph Foods have again joined forces on manufacturing, with plans for a new plant in Iowa.

Seaboard and Triumph have formed a venture to build a site in Sioux City. The facility is expected to process three million hogs a year and will supply domestic and international customers with fresh pork products. The site will serve retail, foodservice and "further processing markets", a spokesperson for Seaboard said.

Construction will start this summer and is slated to be completed by July 2017. Production will start that autumn.

"We anticipate using the PrairieFresh Premium Pork brand for the domestic retail and foodservice markets, as well as possibly some private-label products," the spokesperson told just-food. "For international markets, we’ll market under Seaboard Farms and potentially other international brands developed for specific markets."

The Iowa plant is the third fresh pork processing facility in what Seaboard and Triumph call their "integrated food system". The two other sites are a Seaboard plant in Guymon, Oklahoma, plus a Triumph factory in St Joseph, Missouri.

Both plants serve markets in the US and overseas. The Seaboard spokesperson said the companies had not finalised their international plans for the Iowa facility. "No final sales plans have been made, but currently the two fresh pork processing plants sell to more than 30 countries, with Japan, Korea and Mexico as our primary markets, and we expect for international sales to be similar for the new plant," he said.
