Nestle is to invest CHF4m (US$4.4m) in Singapore to expand its research and development arm.

The investment, Nestle said today (20 March), will be used to strengthen the Singapore R&D centre’s product development in the areas of culinary, coffee mixes and out-of-home products. As a result, it will become Nestle’s lead centre for quality assurance and food safety management for markets in Asia, Oceania and Africa.

Products developed at the centre include spice mix Maggi Masala-ae-Magic, Maggi Sajian Leluarga noodles, Milo malt beverages and Nescafe coffee.

“We took an important step when we set up our research and development centre in Singapore in 1981,” said Nestle CEO Paul Bulcke. “It was then our first R&D Centre in Asia, and our response to fast economic growth in the region.

“Singapore’s strategic location…has made it an ideal base from which to drive our pan-Asian operations. It is well-positioned to help us successfully innovate in Asia, for Asian consumers.”

Nestle’s Singapore R&D centre is one of 32 operated by the company globally. Products developed at the centre are sold in 16 countries including India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan.
