South Africa is to reopen the import pipeline for boneless beef from Brazil.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the measure will allow the normalisation of bilateral trade in the product and will mean the lifting of embargoes imposed in 2005 and 2012 as a result of foot and mouth disease and a case of BSE in the country.

The announcement is a result of efforts between the Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, and Foreign Affairs.

A statement added the move was beneficial for Brazilian boneless beef businesses, given the "considerable potential of that market".

The South African market also recently approved exports for pork.

"Both, together, contribute to the generation of employment and income, through the expansion and diversification of Brazilian agribusiness exports," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
