South African fruit juice specialist Good Hope International Beverages has made a foray outside its established business with the rollout of a soymilk line.

Now, the firm plans to broaden its range still further with the launch of soymilk and fruit juice blend beverages, as well as its first food product, a range of soy nutrition bars intended to spearhead a move into the functional food arena.

Available in four flavours (Apple, Apricot & Peach, Strawberry and Tropical, the soymilk/juice blends contain no artificial ingredients, additives or preservatives and are positioned as a nutritious alternative to dairy products, eg for vegetarians.

The company (www.ghib.com) told just-food.com at Natural Products Expo Europe that the blends will likely debut in the UK in August with a recommended selling price of £1.49 (US$2.2), to be followed by a launch in the Benelux region.

The soy bars, which are the result of two years’ R&D at Good Hope, are separated into two categories, dubbed ‘health’ and ‘recovery,’ with a range of added vitamins, minerals and plant extracts which varies according to their use. Three health bars are branded Just for Men, Just for Women and Just for Kids, while another three recovery products address specific applications – Just for Sports, Max Revive (for stress or over-indulgence) and Immune Booster (to protect from illness).

The bars are sugar-, wheat- and preservative free, have real fruit chunks and are made from certified non-genetically-modified soybeans, said Good Hope. They should reach the UK market in July, with a recommended retail price of £4.00 for six.
